Memory Clone vs HereAfter AI: Recorded Stories or Chat History

People looking for a “HereAfter AI alternative” usually want one of two things: a way to keep a loved one’s real stories, or a way to keep talking in their style. These are different jobs. This page explains both approaches fairly, what changed at HereAfter AI in 2026, and how the two ideas can work together.

HereAfter AI let a person record spoken answers to interview prompts, so family could later ask questions and hear those real recordings. In mid-2026 it announced it was shutting down. Memory Clone works differently: it is a Windows app that builds a private AI simulation from exported chats and notes, generating new text replies in that person’s style.

What changed at HereAfter AI in 2026

In mid-2026, the HereAfter AI homepage carried a farewell notice saying the service was shutting down. It thanked families and asked existing account holders to email support@hereafter.ai to request their life story recordings.

When we checked on 6 October 2026, the hereafter.ai website returned a “page not found” error and the Google Play listing was no longer available. We cannot confirm whether the support address is still monitored or how long recordings will be kept.

If you or a relative used HereAfter AI: request the recordings as soon as possible, then keep copies in at least two places, for example on a computer and an external drive. Our digital legacy guide explains how to store voice recordings and photos safely.

HereAfter AI is a trademark of its owner. Memory Clone is not affiliated with HereAfter AI. Features change often; this comparison reflects public information checked on 6 October 2026.

How HereAfter AI worked

HereAfter AI was built around a guided interview. A friendly virtual interviewer offered hundreds of story prompts about childhood, family, relationships, career and personality. The storyteller picked prompts, pressed record and talked. They could also add photos to go with each story.

Invited family members could then speak questions to the app. The app replied with the closest matching story in the storyteller’s own recorded voice, and showed the related photos. Only people the storyteller authorised could access the memories.

What it did well: every answer was a genuine recording, so nothing was invented. Hearing a real voice tell a real story is something no text-based tool can replace. The guided voice and prompts were designed so that people of all ages could use it.

Its natural limit: it could only answer what had been recorded, and it needed the person’s time and willingness while they were alive and well.

How Memory Clone works

Memory Clone starts from material that often already exists: years of written conversation. You export chats from WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Instagram or Discord, add your own notes as text files, and import them into the Windows desktop app.

The app builds a private memory index on your PC and learns writing style separately for each relationship. A clone writes to each contact the way the person wrote to that contact, with their nicknames, emoji and tone. Replies are generated by cloud AI only after you switch on cloud processing for that clone, and only a bounded selection of excerpts is sent.

Memory Clone imports chat exports and notes that you download yourself.

Memory Clone does not use voice notes, photos or video today; audio support is on the roadmap. It is an AI simulation, so replies can be wrong or out of character. The app is currently in alpha.

When a recorded-story approach fits better

  • The person is still here and willing to sit down and tell their stories.
  • You want their real voice, not generated text.
  • You only want words they truly said, with nothing invented.
  • The person rarely used messaging apps, so there is little chat history.

You do not need a dedicated app for this. A phone’s voice recorder and a list of good questions can capture the same stories. Keep the audio files yourself, in more than one place.

When Memory Clone fits better

  • Years of chats already exist, and you want to keep the way someone actually wrote.
  • You want to make an AI of yourself for reflection, or for family later, using your own messages.
  • You want to search real dated memories across your conversations, not only listen to set stories.
  • You want original archives to stay on your own computer.

If the clone would be of another living person, ask them first. Read our consent guide and the Acceptable Use Policy.

Use both: record stories now, keep the chats too

Recorded stories and chat history capture different sides of a person. Stories show how someone explains their life. Chats show how they joked, comforted and argued with the people closest to them. Many families will want both.

  1. Record a few stories. Ask about childhood, how they met their partner, lessons they would pass on. Save the audio files.
  2. Export important chats. Follow our WhatsApp export guide and keep the files with the recordings.
  3. Talk about AI openly. Ask how they would feel about a simulation built from their messages, and write down their wishes.
  4. Decide later. Once the files are safe, you can choose whether to build anything from them, now or years from now.

Questions to ask any legacy service

HereAfter AI’s closure is a reminder that any service can end, including ours. Before trusting a provider with memories, ask:

  • Can I download everything in standard formats, at any time, without contacting support?
  • Do I keep my own copy of the original files, or do they live only on the provider’s servers?
  • What happens to my data if the company closes?
  • Who can access the memories, and how is that controlled?

With Memory Clone, the chat exports you import remain your own files on your PC, so they stay readable even without the app. See what local-first means in practice, then download the app if it fits your needs.

Preguntas frecuentes

Is HereAfter AI still available?

In mid-2026 HereAfter AI announced it was shutting down, and on 6 October 2026 its website was offline. Its notice asked account holders to email support@hereafter.ai to request their recordings.

Is Memory Clone a replacement for HereAfter AI?

Not directly. HereAfter AI replayed real voice recordings, while Memory Clone generates new text replies from exported chats and notes. They preserve different things and can complement each other.

Can Memory Clone use voice recordings?

Not today. Memory Clone works with written messages and notes. Audio support is on the roadmap, and voice cloning is a research topic only.

How can I save a parent’s stories without an app?

Record conversations with a phone voice recorder using a list of questions, then keep the audio files on a computer and a backup drive.

Does Memory Clone work on phones?

Memory Clone is a Windows desktop app. You export chats on your phone and import them on your PC, including with the “Add from phone” QR option.
