How to Save WhatsApp Voice Messages Before They Are Lost

A voice note can hold a laugh, a nickname or a goodnight that no text can replace. Many people come to this guide because they want to keep the voice of a parent, grandparent or friend. Take it one step at a time; the methods below are simple, and none of them deletes anything from WhatsApp.

To save WhatsApp voice messages, export the chat with media: Attach Media on iPhone or Include media on Android. The export includes recent voice notes as audio files, usually in .opus format, which VLC can play on Windows. Then store copies in at least two safe places, such as your PC and trusted cloud storage.

Why voice notes can be lost

  • A phone is lost, broken or reset, and its media was never copied anywhere else.
  • Storage clean-ups, by you or by the phone, remove old media files.
  • In chats with disappearing messages turned on, messages vanish after 24 hours, 7 days or 90 days.
  • Voice messages sent as view once cannot be exported or kept.
  • A WhatsApp backup can only be restored into WhatsApp. It is not a folder of audio files you can open.

The good news: as long as a voice note is still in the chat on your phone, you can usually save it.

Method 1: export the chat with media

This is the most complete method, because it saves voice notes together with the written conversation and its dates.

iPhone

  1. Open the chat on iPhoneOpen WhatsApp and tap the conversation. Tap the contact or group name at the top.
  2. Tap Export chatScroll down and tap Export chat.
  3. Choose Attach MediaTap Attach Media so that voice notes are included.
  4. Save the ZIPChoose Save to Files and pick iCloud Drive or On My iPhone. The ZIP contains the chat text and the media files.

Android

  1. Open the chat on AndroidOpen WhatsApp and tap the conversation.
  2. Open the export menuTap More options (three dots), then More, then Export chat.
  3. Choose Include mediaTap Include media so that voice notes are added as attachments.
  4. Save the filesChoose Google Drive or a files app in the share sheet, so the text file and the audio files are saved together.

WhatsApp adds only the most recent media to an export, and it limits the export size. In a long chat, older voice notes may not be included. If an important older voice note is missing, save it individually with Method 2.

Voice notes usually appear as files ending in .opus, an open audio format. File names often include a date, which helps you match each recording to the conversation. Step-by-step export details are in our iPhone and Android guides.

Method 2: save single voice notes

For one or two special recordings, saving them individually is quicker.

  • Share it out of WhatsApp. Tap and hold the voice message. Depending on your phone and WhatsApp version, you will see a Share option, or a share icon after selecting the message. Use it to send the audio file to Files, Google Drive or your own email.
  • Forward it to yourself. WhatsApp lets you message yourself. Forwarding a voice note to your own chat keeps it safe from deletion in the original chat, but it still lives only inside WhatsApp, so also save a copy outside the app.
  • Check media settings first. If a voice note has not been downloaded yet, tap play once so the phone fetches it before you share it.

Method 3: find voice notes in Android storage

On Android, WhatsApp media that has been downloaded is also stored on the phone. On many recent phones it sits inside the Android folder of internal storage, under media and then a folder named after WhatsApp (often com.whatsapp), with voice notes in their own subfolder. Older phones and versions used a WhatsApp folder at the top of internal storage.

Exact folder names vary between phones and WhatsApp versions, and WhatsApp does not document the path. Connecting the phone to a PC by USB and choosing File Transfer is often the easiest way to browse these folders. Copy files; do not move or delete them from the phone until your copies are safe.

iPhone does not expose WhatsApp’s media folders in the Files app, so use Method 1 or Method 2 there.

Playing .opus files on Windows

Not every program plays .opus files. The free VLC media player has supported the Opus format for many years and plays these voice notes on Windows, macOS and Linux. Double-click the file, or drag it into VLC.

If relatives need a more familiar format, you can convert a copy to MP3 or WAV with an audio tool such as VLC. Always keep the original .opus file as well, because each conversion can slightly change the sound.

Our digital legacy guide for a parent’s messages explains the wider family archive, including photos, chats and legacy account settings.

Listening to the voice of someone you have lost can be comforting and painful at the same time. There is no right pace. It is fine to save the files now and listen later, or with someone you trust.

What about Memory Clone?

Memory Clone does not use voice notes today. It is a Windows app, currently in alpha, that works with the text of exported chats and notes. Support for photos, video and audio is on our roadmap as a planned feature, and voice cloning is still a research topic. This guide is about preserving the recordings themselves, which is worth doing whatever you decide later.

If you also want to keep the written side of a relationship, the same chat export you made for the voice notes contains the text that Memory Clone can import on your PC. See the Windows download when you feel ready.
