Train an AI on Your Facebook Messenger Messages

Many people have a decade or more of Facebook Messenger history: early friendships, family threads, relationships. That depth makes it one of the richest sources for a personal AI. This guide covers what the download contains and how to turn it into a private, relationship-aware clone.

Kurze Antwort

To train an AI on Messenger messages, request your messages from Meta’s Accounts Center (“Download your information”), choose JSON or HTML, then import the downloaded ZIP into a personal AI tool. Memory Clone reads Messenger JSON, HTML and ZIP files locally and learns the person’s style for each relationship separately.

Why Messenger history is valuable for a personal AI

Messenger archives often go back many years, so they capture how someone’s voice changed over time and preserve references to old events, places and people. They also include both sides of each conversation, which lets an AI understand what a message was responding to, not just the words themselves.

Because Facebook is used across generations, Messenger is often where parents and grandparents wrote most. For people building a clone of a family member, it can be the single most important source.

Getting your Messenger data

You request messages through Meta’s Accounts Center using “Download your information”. You can choose a date range, a format (JSON or HTML) and media quality, and Meta prepares a ZIP file for you to download. Our Messenger download guide walks through the current menus step by step.

JSON or HTML?

Either works with Memory Clone. HTML is easier for you to open and read in a browser. JSON is structured data that is easier for software to parse reliably. If you are unsure, choose JSON for importing and keep HTML if you also want a human-readable archive.

End-to-end encrypted chats

Messenger has been moving personal chats to end-to-end encryption. Encrypted messages may not appear in the standard Accounts Center download; Messenger provides a separate download option in its encrypted chat settings (look for message storage). If a conversation you expect is missing, check there.

What is inside the download

A Messenger download is organised into folders, one per conversation, usually under an inbox folder. Each conversation contains one or more message files plus folders for photos, audio and files if you included media. Long conversations are split into several numbered message files.

  • Text messages with sender name and timestamp.
  • Reactions, shared links, stickers and placeholders for calls or unsent messages.
  • Group threads with many participants.
  • Some text in Meta JSON files is encoded in a way that garbles accented letters and emoji if read naively; a good importer repairs this so non-English names and messages display correctly.

Turning the download into a clone

  1. Download and keep the ZIPSave Meta’s ZIP file on your Windows PC. You do not need to unpack it.
  2. Create a cloneChoose yourself, another living person who has agreed, or a person who has died whose materials you have the right to use.
  3. Import the Messenger filesAdd the ZIP, JSON or HTML files. Memory Clone parses conversations locally and builds a memory index on your PC.
  4. Link contactsConfirm who the clone represents and connect each conversation partner to a contact. One person can have Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram threads; link them so the clone understands it is one relationship.
  5. Enable cloud processing and chatTurn on cloud processing for the clone, choose who you are in the chat thread, and start talking.

Group chats, names and ambiguity

Messenger threads often include several people with the same first name, nicknames that change over time, or accounts that were later deactivated (“Facebook user”). Guessing wrong here would mix two people’s relationships together.

Memory Clone never silently merges ambiguous people or picks the first match. When it is unsure whether two names are the same person, it asks you to choose, link or create a contact. That keeps each relationship’s style and memories intact.

Privacy and respect

  • The downloaded files and the memory index stay on your PC.
  • Cloud AI is only used after you switch on cloud processing for a clone, and only the excerpts needed for a reply are sent through the Memory Clone server.
  • Memory Clone does not train AI models on your messages.
  • Your download contains friends’ messages too. Keep the clone private and follow the Acceptable Use Policy, especially for clones of other living people.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a Messenger download take?

Meta prepares the file in the background. Small downloads can be ready quickly; large histories with media can take much longer. You get a notification when it is ready.

Can I train an AI on someone else’s Messenger account?

Only use downloads you are entitled to, such as your own account. Your own download already includes the messages others sent you in your conversations.

Should I include photos and videos?

They are not needed for style learning. A text-only or low-quality media download is smaller and faster to import.

Does Memory Clone connect to my Facebook account?

No. You download your data from Meta yourself and import the files. The app does not log into Facebook or Messenger.
