KI-Klone in Film und Fernsehen

Ghost in the Shell and the Digital Self

Few works of fiction have shaped how we picture digital minds as much as Ghost in the Shell. This article explains its key ideas in plain language, checks them against what technology can actually do in 2026, and draws out what they mean for anyone thinking about an AI clone. It is part of our series on AI clones in film and TV.

Kurze Antwort

In Ghost in the Shell, the “ghost” is a person’s mind or self and the “shell” is the body, often fully artificial. The story asks whether memories, bodies or networks make us who we are. In 2026 cyberbrains do not exist, but AI clones and false-memory research make some of its questions surprisingly practical.

The works in brief

Masamune Shirow’s manga Ghost in the Shell ran in Kodansha’s Young Magazine Kaizokuban from 1989 to 1990. It follows Major Motoko Kusanagi, a cyborg with an almost entirely artificial body, who works for a counter-cyberterrorism unit called Public Security Section 9.

In the 1995 film, the team hunts a mysterious hacker known as the Puppet Master, who can take over people’s cyberbrains. We keep plot details light here so the article stays spoiler-free.

What do “ghost” and “shell” mean?

The shell is the body. In this world it can be replaced piece by piece, or entirely, with machines. The ghost is harder to define: roughly the mind, soul or sense of self that remains when everything physical has been swapped out. Many characters also have a cyberbrain, which connects their thinking directly to networks.

Kusanagi’s quiet worry runs through the story. If almost nothing of her original body remains, and her memories could in principle be edited, how can she be sure there is still a “her” inside? Philosophers call this the problem of personal identity.

Memories that can be hacked

One of the 1995 film’s most unsettling ideas is a man whose memories of a family and a life turn out to be implanted. He feels exactly as certain about them as you feel about yours. The film uses this to ask whether memory can be the foundation of identity if memory can be faked.

Nobody can hack a brain like that in 2026. But psychology has long shown that human memory is reconstructive and can be shaped by suggestion. A 2024 study from MIT Media Lab found that people questioned by a generative AI chatbot after watching a video formed significantly more false memories than people in a control group, and still held them with confidence a week later.

The practical lesson for AI clones: a simulation built from someone’s messages can produce fluent sentences the person never wrote. Treat what any clone “remembers” as a prompt to check the original records, not as proof that something happened.

Cyberbrains vs real brain implants in 2026

The cyberbrain is the furthest from reality. Real brain-computer interfaces are medical devices that record from small areas of the brain. In 2024, for example, researchers reported in the New England Journal of Medicine that implanted electrodes let a man with ALS turn attempted speech into text with high accuracy. That is a remarkable achievement, but it decodes intended words, not thoughts, memories or a self.

No device can copy a person’s mind into a network or a new body. For a closer look at storage and resleeving fantasies, see our article on Altered Carbon’s cortical stacks.

Does an AI have a ghost?

The Puppet Master raises the question in reverse: could something born in a network have a ghost of its own? Today’s chatbots can sound thoughtful and personal, which makes the question feel urgent. A 2023 assessment by a group of 19 researchers, including Yoshua Bengio, concluded that no AI systems at the time were conscious, while noting no obvious technical barrier to building systems that meet more of the scientific indicators in future.

For an AI clone the answer is clearer still. A clone built from your messages is a model of patterns in your writing. In Ghost in the Shell’s language, it borrows the outline of a shell, made of words, but there is no ghost inside it. Our article Caprica’s virtual avatars explores a story where a data-built avatar seems to wake up, and how that compares with reality.

What the story teaches about AI clones

  1. Identity is more than data. Messages and memories are part of a person, but they are not the person. A clone is a reflection, not a continuation.
  2. Records can mislead. If memories can be distorted, so can a simulation’s outputs. Keep the original messages.
  3. Networks blur boundaries. In the story, a connected mind can be invaded. In practice, this is a reason to keep private material local and limit what is sent to the cloud.
  4. Honesty is the safeguard. The healthiest designs always tell you that you are talking to an AI. See our AI Transparency Notice.

Where Memory Clone fits

Memory Clone is a Windows app in alpha that builds a private AI simulation from chats you export yourself (WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, Discord) and your own notes. It learns style separately for each relationship and is designed to keep private facts from one relationship out of conversations with others.

It works with text only today: no voice notes, photos or video. Every clone is presented as an AI simulation, not the person. Imported originals and the memory index stay on your PC, and cloud processing is off until you switch it on for a clone. If you want the full picture of what a clone is, read what an AI clone is.

Häufig gestellte Fragen

What does “ghost in the shell” mean?

The ghost is a person’s mind or self, and the shell is the body that houses it. The title asks what remains of a person when the body is fully artificial.

Is Ghost in the Shell based on a manga?

Yes. Masamune Shirow’s manga was serialised by Kodansha from 1989 to 1990, before the 1995 anime film by Mamoru Oshii.

Do cyberbrains exist?

No. Real brain implants record from small brain areas to help with specific tasks such as speech or cursor control. None connect a whole mind to a network.

Could an AI clone have a ghost?

There is no evidence that current AI systems are conscious. An AI clone imitates patterns in someone’s words and has no inner experience.

Why was the 2017 film controversial?

Many critics and fans objected to casting Scarlett Johansson, a white actor, as Motoko Kusanagi, a Japanese character.
