How to Preserve a Loved One’s Voice and Messages

A voice holds things that text cannot: a laugh, an accent, the way someone says your name. This guide covers both sides of preserving it: making new recordings while a person is alive, and protecting the recordings and messages you already have. For a wider family checklist, see what to save so your family can remember you.

Kurze Antwort

To preserve a loved one’s voice, record relaxed conversations with them in a quiet room while you can, save existing voice notes, voicemails and videos in their original files, export important chats, and keep three copies in at least two places. Think carefully before any voice cloning: it needs their consent and can be misused by scammers.

Start with what could disappear first

If time or energy is limited, protect the things that are easiest to lose. New recordings can wait a day; a voicemail on a phone that is about to be replaced cannot.

ItemWhy it is at riskWhat to do first
Voice notes in chat appsPhone clean-ups, lost phones and disappearing-message settingsSave the audio files outside the app
VoicemailsOften stored only by the phone carrier or on one handsetShare or export each voicemail as an audio file
Videos where they speakScattered across family phones and social accountsAsk relatives to send original files, not screen recordings
Written chatsAccounts can be closed, locked or memorialisedExport the conversations that matter most
New recordingsChances to record may be limited by illness or distancePlan a relaxed conversation soon

Record new conversations while you can

The most precious recordings are often simple conversations. You do not need a studio. A recent smartphone in a quiet room gives a recording that family will treasure; a dedicated recorder and external microphone give better sound if you have them.

  1. Ask firstExplain what you would like to record and why, and who might hear it later. Let them choose topics they are happy to talk about.
  2. Choose a quiet, soft roomThe US National Park Service’s oral history guidance notes that smaller rooms with soft furnishings usually sound warmer than large rooms with hard surfaces. Switch off fans, televisions and notifications.
  3. Test before you beginRecord a minute of small talk, play it back, and move the phone or microphone closer if the voice sounds distant. Put the device on a cloth rather than a bare table.
  4. Start with an introductionSay the date, where you are and who is speaking. It helps anyone who finds the file years from now.
  5. Ask open questionsUse prompts such as “What was your mother like?” or “What are you proudest of?” StoryCorps publishes a free list of Great Questions by theme.
  6. Listen more than you talkAllow pauses. Some of the best stories come after a silence.
  7. Save it straight awayCopy the file off the device the same day and give it a clear name with the date.

Short and frequent is fine. Ten minutes over a cup of tea, repeated over several weeks, can be easier for someone who is tired or unwell than one long interview.

Which audio formats last

For long-term keeping, the Library of Congress prefers uncompressed WAVE audio and also accepts lossless compression. The National Park Service recommends recording oral histories as 24-bit, 96 kHz WAV files where your equipment allows. In everyday terms:

FormatTypeBest use
WAVUncompressedMaster copies of new recordings
FLACLossless, openly documentedSmaller archive copies with no loss of quality
MP3 or AACLossyEasy sharing copies for relatives’ phones
Opus (WhatsApp voice notes)Lossy, original fileKeep exactly as received; convert copies only if needed

The golden rule is to keep the original file unchanged. Every conversion can reduce quality slightly, and the original carries the date and other details that help later.

Archive the voice notes and messages you already have

  • WhatsApp voice notes. Export the chat with media, or save single voice notes. Our step-by-step guide on saving WhatsApp voice messages covers iPhone, Android and playing .opus files on Windows.
  • Written chats. Export the conversations themselves too, because the words, dates and nicknames are part of the memory. See how to export a WhatsApp chat.
  • Voicemails and videos. Save each as an audio or video file, and note who is speaking and when.
  • If the person has died. Do not reset or trade in their phone until someone has checked what is on it. Preserving a parent’s messages explains the gentler, time-sensitive steps.

Back up with the 3-2-1 rule

The US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency describes a simple rule, which it credits to photographer Peter Krogh’s book on managing digital photos: keep 3 copies of any important file, on 2 different types of storage, with 1 copy kept somewhere else.

  • For example: your computer, an external drive, and trusted cloud storage or a relative’s drive in another home.
  • Add a short text file listing each recording, who is speaking, the date and what it is about.
  • The Library of Congress suggests checking your files once a year and copying them to fresh storage about every five years.
  • Recordings are personal. Turn on device encryption and use strong passwords for shared storage.

Voice cloning: consent and fraud risk

Some services can now make a synthetic voice from recordings. It is understandable to want to hear a loved one again. Before you consider it, weigh three things.

Consent

A voice is deeply personal. If the person is alive, ask them directly whether they would ever want their voice recreated, and write down the answer. If they have died, think about what they would have wanted and how close family would feel. Our ethics checklist before cloning someone walks through these questions.

Weak safeguards

In March 2025, Consumer Reports assessed six voice cloning products and found that four of them had no meaningful way to confirm that the speaker had agreed, relying mainly on users ticking a box to say they had the right.

Scams

The US Federal Trade Commission warns that scammers can clone a voice from a short clip posted online and use it in fake family emergency calls. The FBI advises families to agree a secret word or phrase for checking identity, and to keep social media private where possible.

Be careful about posting long, clear recordings of a loved one publicly. If you receive an urgent call asking for money in a familiar voice, hang up and call the person back on a number you know.

Where Memory Clone fits, honestly

Memory Clone does not use voice notes, audio, photos or video today, and it does not clone voices. It is a Windows app, currently in alpha, that builds a private AI simulation from the text of chats you export yourself and notes you write. Support for audio, photos and video is on the roadmap as planned, and voice cloning is only a research topic.

So the recordings in this guide are worth keeping for their own sake. If you also want to keep the written side of a relationship, the same chat exports can be imported on your PC, where originals and the memory index stay local. Every clone is presented as an AI, not the person. You can read more on the download page whenever you feel ready, or not at all.

Listening to a voice you miss can be comforting and painful at once. There is no right pace. It is fine to save the files now and listen later, or with someone you trust.

Häufig gestellte Fragen

What is the best way to record an elderly parent’s voice?

Ask first, choose a quiet room with soft furnishings, test the sound, and record a relaxed conversation using open questions. A modern smartphone is good enough to start.

Which audio format is best for long-term storage?

Uncompressed WAV is the safest master format, and FLAC is a good lossless alternative. Keep received files, such as WhatsApp .opus voice notes, in their original form.

Can I make an AI voice of someone who has died?

Some services offer voice cloning, but safeguards vary and laws differ by country. Think about the person’s wishes, close family and fraud risk first. This is general information, not legal advice.

How do scammers use voice cloning?

They can copy a voice from a short public clip and call relatives pretending to be in an emergency. A family code word and calling back on a known number help.

Does Memory Clone recreate voices?

No. Memory Clone works with text only today. Audio support is planned, and voice cloning is a research topic.
