Before you start
- Export works in the WhatsApp app on your iPhone, one chat at a time. WhatsApp’s help pages describe no chat export in WhatsApp Web or the desktop app.
- Update WhatsApp from the App Store first. Menu positions can move between versions.
- Check that you have some free storage on the iPhone, especially if you plan to attach media.
- An iCloud backup of WhatsApp is not an export. A backup can only be restored into WhatsApp; an export is a file you can open and keep.
Export the chat on iPhone
- Open the chatOpen WhatsApp, go to Chats and tap the individual or group conversation you want to keep.
- Open contact or group infoTap the contact’s name or the group name at the top of the chat.
- Tap Export chatScroll down the info screen and tap Export chat.
- Choose mediaIf the chat contains media, WhatsApp asks you to choose Attach Media or Without Media.
- Choose where to send itThe iPhone share sheet opens. Choose Save to Files, AirDrop, Mail or another app. WhatsApp exports the chat history as a ZIP file.
Without Media or Attach Media?
| Option | What you get | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Without Media | A small ZIP with the text transcript only; photos, videos and voice notes appear as placeholders | Reading, searching, keeping long histories and importing into AI apps |
| Attach Media | A larger ZIP with the transcript plus the most recent media files from the chat | Keeping photos and voice notes as well as the words |
WhatsApp adds only the most recent media when you choose Attach Media, and it limits how large an export can be. If you want both the full text and the media, export the chat twice: once without media and once with media.
Messages sent as view once are never exported. If you mainly want voice notes, see how to save WhatsApp voice messages.
Where to save the ZIP on your iPhone
- Save to Files, iCloud Drive: the file syncs to your Apple Account, so you can open it later on a Mac, on iCloud.com or with iCloud for Windows.
- Save to Files, On My iPhone: the file stays only on the phone. This is private, but you lose it if the phone is lost or reset.
- AirDrop: sends the ZIP straight to a nearby Mac. AirDrop works between Apple devices only.
- Mail: sends the ZIP as an attachment to yourself. For large files, Apple’s Mail Drop can send attachments up to 5 GB through iCloud.
- OneDrive, Google Drive or Dropbox: if the app is installed, it appears in the share sheet and uploads the ZIP to your account.
An export contains private conversations, including the other person’s words. Choose a place you control, and delete extra copies from email or shared folders once the file is where you need it.
Getting the export onto a Windows PC
| Route | How it works | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| iCloud for Windows | Turn on iCloud Drive in iCloud for Windows, then open iCloud Drive in File Explorer | Best if you saved the ZIP to iCloud Drive; pin the file to keep it downloaded |
| iCloud.com | Sign in at iCloud.com in a browser, open Drive, select the ZIP and download it | Nothing to install on the PC |
| Open the email you sent yourself on the PC and save the attachment | Fine for text-only exports; large media exports may exceed your mail provider’s limit | |
| OneDrive or Google Drive | Upload from the share sheet, then download on the PC or use the sync app | Uses your cloud account; remove the copy afterwards if you do not need it there |
| Memory Clone Add from phone | Scan a QR code shown in the app and send the file over your home Wi-Fi | Only for importing into Memory Clone; see the steps below |
A USB cable is less useful here than you might expect. Apple’s Apple Devices app for Windows only transfers files for apps that support File Sharing, so a ZIP you saved in the Files app may not appear. Cloud storage or email is usually simpler.
Keep the ZIP as it is. You do not need to unzip it before reading or importing; Windows can open ZIP files directly.
What is inside the export
The ZIP usually contains a text file named _chat.txt. If you chose Attach Media, the same ZIP also holds the media files, such as photos, videos and voice notes.
- Each message line usually starts with a date and time in square brackets, then the sender’s name as saved in your contacts, then the message.
- The date format follows your iPhone’s language and region settings, so an export made in Germany looks different from one made in the US.
- Media you left out appears as a short placeholder line instead of the file.
- System notices, such as the encryption message or people joining a group, appear as lines without a normal sender.
- WhatsApp states that an export cannot be re-imported into WhatsApp, because it is a text file and not a backup.
Troubleshooting on iPhone
| Problem | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| No Export chat option | Advanced chat privacy is on for that chat, or WhatsApp is out of date | Update WhatsApp; ask whoever turned on Advanced chat privacy whether they agree to switch it off |
| The share sheet closes or nothing is saved | Low storage or the chosen app failed | Free up space and try Save to Files first |
| Old messages are missing | WhatsApp limits the size of an export | Export again without media |
| The email will not send | The attachment is too large for your mail provider | Use Save to Files with iCloud Drive, or Mail Drop |
| Strange characters in the text | The file was opened with the wrong text encoding | Open it in an editor that reads UTF-8, such as Notepad on Windows 10 or 11 |

Using your iPhone export with Memory Clone
Memory Clone is a Windows app, currently in alpha, that imports WhatsApp TXT and ZIP exports from iPhone and Android in many languages and date formats. It builds a local memory index on your PC and learns the writing style of each relationship. It reads the text of your chats; it does not use photos, videos or voice notes today. You can download it for Windows.
- Start a clone in Memory CloneOn your PC, open Memory Clone and go to the import step for WhatsApp and other chats.
- Choose Add from phoneSelect Add from phone. The app shows a QR code.
- Scan with your iPhoneKeep the iPhone and the PC on the same Wi-Fi network, then scan the QR code with the iPhone camera. The link expires after 15 minutes.
- Pick the ZIPChoose the WhatsApp ZIP from the Files app when asked. The file goes to your PC over the local network.

Domande frequenti
Why does my iPhone export come as a ZIP and not a TXT file?
WhatsApp on iPhone always exports chat history as a ZIP file. Inside it you will usually find the transcript as _chat.txt, plus media if you attached it.
Can I export all my WhatsApp chats at once on iPhone?
No. WhatsApp exports one chat at a time. Repeat the steps for each conversation you want to keep.
Does the other person know I exported the chat?
WhatsApp does not describe any notification to the other person. Treat the file with the same care as the conversation itself.
Can I move the export to a Windows PC with a cable?
Apple Devices for Windows only transfers files for apps that support File Sharing, so it may not see the ZIP. iCloud Drive, iCloud.com or email is usually easier.
Can I put the export back into WhatsApp?
No. WhatsApp states that exported chat history cannot be re-imported, because it is a text file and not a backup.
