Is It Safe to Upload Your Chats to an AI?

People paste WhatsApp exports into AI assistants to summarise a relationship, settle an argument or build a personal chatbot. Before you do, it helps to know where that text goes and who else it affects.

Uploading chats to an AI is never risk-free, but it can be safe if you choose the settings with care. General AI services keep chats in your history, may use them to improve models depending on settings, and may use human review. Your chats hold other people’s messages, so share less and delete what you do not need.

What happens when you upload a chat to a general AI service

When you paste or upload a chat into a consumer AI assistant, the text is sent to the provider’s servers to generate an answer. What happens next depends on the service and on your settings. The main questions are always the same:

  • Is it saved to my history? Usually yes, until you delete it.
  • Can it be used to train or improve models? On many consumer services this depends on a setting.
  • Can people at the company read it? Some services use human reviewers for quality and safety.
  • How long is it kept after I delete it? Retention periods differ and can be longer for safety or legal reasons.

ChatGPT: what OpenAI says

OpenAI says that when you use its services for individuals, such as ChatGPT, it may use your content to train its models. You can change this in Settings under Data controls by turning off Improve the model for everyone. When it is off, new conversations are not used to train OpenAI models.

Turning that setting off does not delete or hide saved chats; they stay in your history until you delete them. OpenAI also offers Temporary Chat: these chats do not appear in your history, are not used to improve models and may be kept for up to 30 days for safety purposes.

For organisations, OpenAI says that by default it does not use content from ChatGPT Business, Enterprise or Edu workspaces to train its models. Data sent to the OpenAI API is also not used for training unless the customer opts in.

Gemini: what Google says

In Gemini Apps, Google’s Keep Activity setting controls whether your chats are saved to your account. By default, activity is auto-deleted after 18 months, and you can change this to 3 or 36 months or turn auto-delete off.

Google says that even with Keep Activity off, chats are kept with your account for up to 72 hours to respond to you and protect the service. A subset of chats is reviewed by human reviewers, and reviewed chats can be kept for up to three years, even if you delete your activity. Google asks users not to enter confidential information they would not want a reviewer to see.

ChatGPT and Gemini are trademarks of their owners. Memory Clone is not affiliated with Google or OpenAI, although it uses OpenAI’s API to write replies when cloud processing is on. Settings change often; this summary reflects official help pages checked on 6 October 2026.

These services give users real controls, and many people use them responsibly. The point is not that they are unsafe, but that you should choose the settings deliberately before you paste years of private messages.

Your chats contain other people’s data

A chat export is not only yours. It contains your friends’ and family members’ words, names, phone numbers and sometimes photos. They shared those messages with you, not with an AI company.

In the European Union, the GDPR does not apply to processing “by a natural person in the course of a purely personal or household activity” (Article 2). Whether uploading someone else’s messages to an online service stays within that exemption depends on the facts, and the service provider has its own legal duties. Other countries have different rules.

A practical, respectful approach: share only what you need, avoid sharing other people’s secrets, and ask before you build anything lasting from another living person’s messages. Our consent guide and the Acceptable Use Policy explain this in more detail.

This section is general information, not legal advice. If you need certainty, ask a qualified lawyer in your country.

Sensitive information to watch for

The GDPR gives extra protection to special categories of personal data, including health, racial or ethnic origin, political opinions, religious or philosophical beliefs, trade union membership, genetic and biometric data, sex life and sexual orientation (Article 9). Private chats often contain exactly this kind of information.

Also look for things that could cause direct harm if they leaked:

  • Passwords, PINs, one-time codes and recovery codes.
  • Bank card numbers, account details and photos of ID documents.
  • Home addresses, travel plans and children’s schools.
  • Medical results, diagnoses and therapy conversations.
  • Intimate messages and photos.

A practical safety checklist

  1. Decide what you actually need. If you want a summary of one week, do not upload ten years.
  2. Remove what you do not need. Export without media where possible (see our WhatsApp export guide), and cut out passwords, addresses and other people’s secrets.
  3. Check the training setting. Find the data or privacy controls and choose whether your content can be used to improve models.
  4. Consider a temporary or incognito mode if the service offers one, and read how long those chats are still kept.
  5. Delete history you no longer need. Remember that deleted data may still be kept for a limited time for safety or legal reasons.
  6. Read the retention terms. Look for how long data is kept, whether humans review it and what happens when you delete your account.
  7. Prefer tools that keep originals local when you work with whole archives, so only small excerpts ever leave your device.
  8. Protect your own device and account. Use a strong password, two-step verification and disk encryption.

How Memory Clone handles your chats

Memory Clone was designed for people who want an AI built from their messages without handing over whole archives. It is a Windows app in alpha.

  • Originals stay local. Imported files and the memory index stay on your PC. Whole archives are never uploaded.
  • Excerpts only with consent. Cloud processing is off until you switch it on for a clone. Then only a bounded selection of excerpts and local style statistics is sent through the Memory Clone server to OpenAI, to build the Persona Blueprint and write replies.
  • No training. Memory Clone does not train models on your content. OpenAI states that API data is not used for training unless the customer opts in, and Memory Clone has not opted in. OpenAI may keep abuse-monitoring logs for up to 30 days under its own policy.
  • Relationship boundaries. Private facts from one relationship are kept out of conversations with other people.
  • No built-in encryption at rest. The app does not add its own encryption to the local workspace, so turn on Windows device encryption such as BitLocker and protect your Windows account.

The Privacy Policy has the full details, and our guide to a private, local-first AI chatbot explains the design. If it fits your needs, you can download the app.

Perguntas frequentes

Does ChatGPT train on chats I upload?

OpenAI says it may use content from individual ChatGPT accounts to train its models unless you turn off Improve the model for everyone in Data controls. Temporary Chats are not used to improve models.

Can I delete a chat I uploaded to an AI?

Most services let you delete conversations from your history. Some data may still be kept for a limited time, for example for safety reviews, so check the provider’s retention terms.

Is it legal to upload a WhatsApp chat with someone else’s messages?

It depends on your country and on how you use it. Purely personal use is treated differently from sharing or commercial use. This is general information, not legal advice.

Should I include photos and voice notes?

Only if you need them. Exporting without media shares less personal data, and Memory Clone does not use photos, video or voice notes today.

Does Memory Clone upload my WhatsApp export?

No. The original file stays on your PC. With cloud processing on, only selected excerpts needed for the clone and its replies are sent.
