Why Instagram and Discord are worth including
Instagram DMs tend to be quick, visual and casual: reactions to posts, inside jokes, late-night chats with close friends. Discord is often where people write the most in total, across gaming, study and hobby communities, with a distinctive voice that may not show up anywhere else.
Adding these sources gives a clone a fuller picture of how someone writes in casual settings, and fills gaps for people who rarely use WhatsApp or Messenger.
Instagram: what the download contains
You request an Instagram download through Meta’s Accounts Center, selecting messages and choosing HTML or JSON. See our Instagram download guide for current steps.
- Both sides of each conversation, organised in one folder per chat, so the AI sees what each message responded to.
- Group DMs as well as one-to-one threads.
- Shared posts and reels, often as links or placeholders rather than full context.
- Reactions and likes, which can be useful signals of how someone responds.
As with Messenger, some messages in end-to-end encrypted chats may need a separate download from the app’s encrypted chat settings. Memory Clone reads Instagram ZIP, JSON and HTML downloads and repairs the text encoding Meta uses for accented letters and emoji.
Discord: what the data package contains
Discord lets you request a copy of your data from the privacy settings in the app. Discord prepares a package and emails you a download link, which can take days. See our Discord data package guide.
- Your own messages, organised by channel and direct message conversation, with timestamps.
- Channel and server context such as channel names, but generally not other people’s messages.
- Account information and activity data that is not needed for a personality model.
Because a Discord package mainly contains messages you sent, it is ideal for a clone of yourself: it is a large, clean sample of your writing. It is less suited to cloning someone else, since their messages are in their package, not yours.
Strengths and limits compared
| Source | Includes | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Instagram DMs | Both sides of each chat | Relationship-specific style and shared memories | Many messages are reactions or shared posts with little text |
| Discord package | Messages you sent | A large sample of your own writing style | Little context about what you were replying to |
| WhatsApp export | Both sides, one chat per file | Close personal relationships | Exported chat by chat |
| Messenger download | Both sides, many years | Long-term history, family chats | Encrypted chats may need a separate download |
Combining sources into one clone
- Request each downloadRequest Instagram and Discord data at the same time, since both are prepared in the background.
- Create or open your cloneChoose “Myself” for a self-clone, which can use all of your own material.
- Import every sourceAdd the Instagram ZIP and the Discord package alongside any WhatsApp or Messenger exports.
- Link people across platformsIf a friend is on Instagram and WhatsApp, link both threads to one contact. Memory Clone asks before merging ambiguous names.
- Enable cloud processing and testTurn on cloud processing in Clone Settings, then chat as different friends to check that each relationship sounds right.
Combining sources helps the clone separate your general writing habits from habits that belong to one relationship. Your Discord voice in a large server, for example, should not leak into how the clone talks to your grandmother.
Privacy and consent
Originals and the memory index stay on your PC. Cloud AI is used only after you switch on cloud processing for the clone, and Memory Clone does not train AI models on your data. Instagram downloads include your friends’ messages, so keep any clone private and follow the Acceptable Use Policy. Memory Clone is for adults aged 18 and over.
Frequently asked questions
Does a Discord data package include other people’s messages?
Generally no. It focuses on messages you sent, organised by channel and DM, which makes it most useful for cloning your own writing.
Can I build an AI from Instagram DMs only?
Yes, if there is enough real conversation. Threads that are mostly shared reels and reactions give less style signal than text-heavy chats.
Should I pick JSON or HTML for Instagram?
Either works with Memory Clone. JSON is easier for software to parse; HTML is easier for you to read.
Does Memory Clone connect to Instagram or Discord?
No. You download your data from each platform yourself and import the files locally.
