A simple definition
An AI clone is an AI system built from one real person’s data and designed to imitate how that person communicates. The data can be written messages, voice recordings, photos or video. The clone uses this data to produce new output that resembles the person.
Every AI clone copies only some parts of a person. A text clone can copy writing style and remembered facts. A voice clone can copy the sound of a voice. A video avatar can copy a face. No current technology copies a whole human being, with their thoughts, feelings and future choices.
This is why a good AI clone is always presented as a simulation. It can sound familiar, but it does not think, feel or know anything beyond its data.
The main types of AI clone
The table below shows the five types that people most often call an “AI clone”. They use different data and solve different problems.
| Type | What it imitates | Main data | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personal text clone | Writing style, memories and relationships | Chat exports, notes, personal writing | Talking with a simulation of yourself or someone you know |
| Voice clone | The sound of a voice | Audio recordings | Narration, accessibility, audio messages |
| Video avatar | Face, expressions and movement | Photos and video recordings | Presentations and video messages |
| Creator or expert clone | A public person’s knowledge and tone | Articles, videos, courses, posts | Answering questions from fans or customers |
| Companion character | An invented personality | A written character description | Entertainment and casual conversation |
A companion character is usually not based on a real person. Strictly speaking, it is a persona, not a clone. The AI clone glossary explains these terms in more detail.
How a text AI clone is built
A text clone is built in four main stages. Each stage answers a different question.
- Collect data. The person exports their own chats from apps such as WhatsApp or Messenger, and can add notes. This answers the question “what did this person actually write?”
- Learn the style. Software measures habits such as message length, punctuation, emoji use, nicknames and tone. This answers the question “how does this person write?”
- Build a memory index. The messages are stored in a searchable index. This answers the question “what does this person know and remember?”
- Write replies with a language model. For each new message, the system finds relevant memories and style examples and gives them to a large language model. The model then writes a reply in that style.
The language model is general software that knows how to write. The personal data is what makes the result sound like one person. Our guide on how AI clone memory works explains the retrieval step in detail.

What an AI clone can and cannot do
What it can do
- Reply in a familiar style, with the person’s typical words, rhythm and emoji habits.
- Recall facts and events that appear in the imported data.
- Write differently to different people, if it learns style per relationship.
- Help you explore old conversations through a chat interface.
What it cannot do
- Know anything that is not in its data.
- Say what the person would really think about new events.
- Feel, remember or be conscious. It produces text, nothing more.
- Be fully accurate. It can mix up details or invent things that never happened.
Be careful with any service that says its clone is you or someone you love. That claim is not true for any current AI.
Common uses
- Cloning yourself. Many people build a clone of themselves to see how they write, or to leave a conversational record for their family. See how to create an AI clone of yourself.
- Remembering someone. Some people build a clone from the messages of a relative or friend who has died. This needs care, and it is not a replacement for grief support.
- Reflection. Talking with a simulation of your past self can help you notice patterns in how you communicate.
- Curiosity. Some people simply want to understand what personal AI can do with their own data.
Risks and consent
An AI clone uses personal data, so it brings real risks. The most important ones are:
- Consent. Cloning another living person without their permission is not acceptable. Read our consent guide and the Acceptable Use Policy.
- Deception. A clone must never be used to trick people into thinking they are talking to the real person.
- Other people’s privacy. Chats contain messages from friends and family, not only from you.
- Emotional effects. A clone of someone who died can bring comfort, but it can also make grief harder. Take breaks and talk to people you trust.
- Data security. Ask where your files are stored and what is sent to the cloud.

How Memory Clone does it
Memory Clone is a personal text clone for Windows. It is in alpha, so it is still in active development and may contain bugs.
- You export your own chats from WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram or Discord, and you can add notes as TXT files.
- The original files and the memory index stay on your PC.
- Style is learned per relationship. The clone writes to each contact the way the person wrote to that contact.
- Private facts from one relationship are kept out of other conversations.
- Cloud AI processing is off until you switch it on for a clone. Then only a limited selection of excerpts is sent to write replies.
- Memory Clone does not train AI models on your content.
- Every clone is presented as an AI simulation. Users must be 18 or older.
Memory Clone does not use voice, photos or video today. You can download the Windows app and see plans for clone slots and credits.
Frequently asked questions
What is an AI clone in simple words?
An AI clone is a program that imitates how one real person communicates. It learns from that person’s real messages, voice or images and then produces new output in a similar style.
Is an AI clone the same as a chatbot?
No. A general chatbot is designed to help everyone in a neutral voice. An AI clone is designed to imitate one specific person. See AI clone vs chatbot.
Can an AI clone think like me?
No. It can imitate patterns in how you write and repeat facts from your data. It does not think, feel or make real decisions.
Is it legal to make an AI clone?
Making a clone of yourself from your own data is the simplest case. Cloning another person needs their permission, and the rules depend on your country. This is general information, not legal advice.
Does an AI clone need my voice?
Only a voice clone needs audio. A text clone, such as Memory Clone, works from written messages and notes.
App menus change over time, so labels on your device may differ slightly. Memory Clone creates an AI simulation from the material you provide; it is not the person.
